About This Book

The fifteenth entry in Patrick G. Laplante's Painting the Mists series returns to Verdant Crossroads at a moment of quiet crisis. Cha Ming is home, his allies are intact, but the fragile peace around them is fraying fast. A key protector has withdrawn from the world, and that absence has left the territory politically exposed, with neighboring powers growing bold. Cha Ming must lean on his skills as a craftsman to build unexpected coalitions, even as his private research into Daoist principles and the nature of power threatens to attract dangers that no alliance can deflect.

Adam Verner brings a steady, inhabited quality to the performance, navigating a large cast and the series' layered cultivation lore without losing clarity or momentum. The 17-plus-hour runtime rewards patient listeners; Verner's measured delivery gives Laplante's intricate world room to breathe, while keeping the political maneuvering and action scenes distinct and grounded. Long-running cultivation fantasy translates particularly well to audio, and this installment is a strong example of why.
