Matt Coyle writes noir the old-fashioned way — morally compromised protagonist, a past that won't stay buried, and a city that's always slightly more dangerous than it looks. His Rick Cahill series, set in San Diego, follows a disgraced ex-cop turned PI who keeps stumbling into cases that cost him more than he bargained for. Yesterday's Echo introduced Cahill with the kind of debut that signals a writer who already knows what he's doing: spare, atmospheric prose that earns its darkness without wallowing in it. Lost Tomorrows and Blind Vigil deepen the character in ways that reward readers who've followed the series from the start. Coyle writes with the economy of Raymond Chandler but gives his hero a genuine emotional interior — the damage is real, not decorative. Readers who like their thrillers character-first, with consequences that accumulate, will find a lot to admire here.
