Books Like The Scarecrow

Peter Giles narrates *The Scarecrow* with a measured, journalistic cool that mirrors the protagonist's register — there's a controlled flatness to his delivery that lets the dread accumulate quietly, almost without you clocking it, until the eleven hours are gone. That restraint is doing real work: in a story this procedural and this dark, a who pushed harder would tip the whole thing into melodrama. Most of the titles here are also Connelly — same author, same tightly wound world — and Giles returns for several of them, carrying that same unhurried authority through stories of comparable length with equally unforgiving atmospheres.
