Axel
Carolina Reapers • Book 1
by Samantha Whiskey
About This Book
Axel has spent his hockey career sacrificing everything for family — but now that his younger brother is grown, the Carolina Reapers come knocking with an offer he can't refuse, because it comes attached to Langley Pierce. She's sharp-tongued, self-possessed, and the one woman who's always gotten under his skin. When she offhandedly swears off relationships, his solution is as absurd as it is irresistible: a six-month marriage contract. It's a premise that sounds like a bad idea on paper and a very good idea on every page.
What makes Axel work is Whiskey's knack for writing heroes who are genuinely devoted without losing their edge — Axel pursues Langley with patience and intention, not possessiveness, and that distinction matters. The banter is fast and earned, the tension builds through small moments rather than manufactured drama, and the fake-relationship setup never overstays its welcome. At 241 pages, the pacing is tight; there's no filler, just a clean, satisfying arc that leaves you reaching for the next book in the series.
