The banter is sharp without being exhausting, the heat is earned rather than inserted, and the dual wounds at the center of the story give the eventual tenderness genuine weight. Madden-Mills is particularly good at letting her characters be flawed in ways that feel true, which makes their moments of vulnerability land harder than you expect.
