  • Great if you want: gothic small-town secrets with a family mystery at the core
  • Listening experience: slow-burn and atmospheric, tension builds through dread not action
  • Narration: Ezzo's controlled, wary delivery fits Margot's guarded interiority well
  • Skip if: you found Wilder Girls frustrating — this has the same divisive pacing

About This Audiobook

Margot has never known anything about her mother's past or the family she came from, only silence and deflection. When she discovers a photograph pointing her toward a town called Phalene, she goes looking for the history her mother refused to give her, and finds something wrong at the root of everything. The town holds a disturbing pattern of repetition, as if the past refuses to stay buried, and Margot begins to suspect that whatever drove her mother away is still very much alive.

Lauren Ezzo narrates with a taut, unsettled energy that keeps the gothic atmosphere tightly wound throughout the novel's relatively compact runtime. Her performance captures Margot's determined momentum as well as the creeping wrongness of what she uncovers, making the horror feel organic rather than ornamental. The audiobook format amplifies the sense of isolation and enclosure that makes Rory Power's literary horror so effective.
