August heat bakes the 87th Precinct as Detective Bert Kling buckles under the weight of a fraying marriage, a stalking ex-convict, and what looks like a suicide that won't stay simple. Ed McBain in the mid-series entries found ways to fold his detective's private lives into the case structure without softening either, and Heat is a characteristic example: the personal and the procedural press against each other until neither can be easily separated.
Dick Hill narrates McBain with the same flat authority the prose demands, never editorializing where the writing trusts the reader to draw their own conclusions. At nearly eight hours, this entry has room to let the character drama develop alongside the investigation. Hill's performance of Kling's mounting anxiety is among the quieter achievements in his long run with the series — consistent, restrained, and effective.
