McBain constructs this entry as a single-location thriller — nearly the entire novel takes place in the precinct house, with Dodge holding the detectives hostage while Carella works a case somewhere in the city, unaware of what awaits him.
Dick Hill narrates with the stripped-down urgency the format demands. The real-time pressure of the trapped detectives comes through in his pacing — he never lets the tension release in the comedy that other McBain entries allow. At just over five and a half hours, Killer's Wedge is a pure thriller exercise, the McBain series at its most concentrated and the 87th Precinct formula pushed deliberately against its own conventions.
