Marcus Lazarus finds himself trapped in the realm of Faerie, not by choice but by necessity—a ghoul bite from his latest job threatens to transform him unless he can find a cure. Travis Baldree delivers another stellar performance in this fourth installment of The Lazarus Codex, capturing the protagonist's trademark snark and vulnerability with equal skill. His portrayal of the various fae characters brings distinct personality to each court member, while maintaining the gritty urban fantasy tone that grounds the magical proceedings. Baldree's pacing allows listeners to fully absorb both the political maneuvering and action sequences, making the seven-and-a-half-hour runtime feel brisk and engaging. The narrator's ability to convey Lazarus's fish-out-of-water predicament while building tension around the ticking clock of his supernatural affliction makes this a particularly compelling audio experience.
