Allan Corduner voices Death with exhausted tenderness — unhurried, a little ironic, never theatrical — and that register gives the 14 hours a strange gravity, like being told a tragedy by someone who has seen too many to flinch but still hasn't learned not to care. The measured pace earns every quiet moment, and Corduner's tonal control is precise enough that when the prose turns lyrical, it never drifts into sentimentality. Several of the books here are also by Corduner, almost all run close to that same 14-hour length, and the ones that aren't his tend to carry the same serious emotional weight — high ratings, a few awards, and the kind of unhurried literary atmosphere that makes you feel like you're being trusted with something.
