Pratchett's prose here is doing more work than it lets on. The jokes arrive fast enough that you might miss how precisely the underlying argument is constructed — but it holds together with real structural confidence. This is one of his leaner Discworld novels, stripped of the sprawl that sometimes defines the later books, and that economy suits him. Every scene earns its place, and Granny Weatherwax, introduced here for the first time, arrives fully formed and utterly unforgettable.
