Making Money

What happens when you hand the keys to a city's entire financial system to a man whose greatest skill is convincing people to believe in things that aren't quite real? That's the delicious premise of Making Money, the second Moist von Lipwig novel, in which reformed con artist Moist finds himself in charge of Ankh-Morpork's Royal Bank — not because he wants the job, but because refusing isn't really an option. Pratchett uses the absurdity of banking, currency, and economic faith to ask genuinely sharp questions about what money actually is and why anyone believes in it. The stakes are civic, political, and personal, and Pratchett somehow makes all three feel urgent.

What makes this one sing as a reading experience is the pace. Pratchett plots like a thriller writer disguised as a humorist — chapters end on just the right note of unease or anticipation, and the jokes never slow the momentum. Moist is one of his most entertaining protagonists: charming, self-aware, and perpetually in over his head. The prose crackles with footnotes, wordplay, and ideas that reward slow reading even as the story pulls you forward.
