What happens when a teenage demonologist accidentally summons not a demon but the most hapless wizard in existence? He gets exactly what he asked for — just not in any way he imagined. Eric is a slim, gleefully subversive romp through Discworld's version of Faustian myth, sending its unlikely trio careening through time, space, and a series of civilizations each more satirically doomed than the last. The stakes are technically cosmic — immortality, world domination, eternal love — but the real pleasure is watching grand ambition collide spectacularly with profound incompetence.

At under two hundred pages, Eric is one of the leanest entries in the Discworld series, which gives Pratchett license to be almost relentlessly funny without pausing to breathe. The prose is dense with sardonic footnotes and throwaway observations that reward slow, attentive reading — blinking past a sentence can mean missing the actual joke. It works both as a standalone comic fantasy and as a richer experience for readers already familiar with Rincewind, whose particular brand of cowardly self-preservation Pratchett has refined into something almost elegant.
