Pratchett is doing something structurally clever here, weaving genuine menace into what could have been a straightforward procedural, and the result is one of the Vimes novels where the comedy and the darkness feel most fully integrated. The prose moves with its usual precision and wit, but the emotional beats hit harder than you might expect. Pratchett had a gift for making you laugh and then, a sentence later, making you feel the full weight of something that actually matters.
