Thief of Time

Time has always been Discworld's most slippery resource — and someone is about to steal all of it. When a young clockmaker is commissioned to build the perfect timepiece, the Monks of History scramble to stop him, because a truly accurate clock won't just measure time: it will end it. Pratchett builds his story around Lu Tze, an unassuming History Monk who has quietly shaped civilizations, and his unpredictable apprentice Lobsang Ludd, whose relationship with time turns out to be deeply personal. Beneath the cosmic stakes runs something quieter — questions about patience, destiny, and whether the universe has a sense of humor, or just very bad timing.

What makes this one sing as a reading experience is how Pratchett layers genuine philosophical weight inside jokes that arrive from unexpected angles. The prose has a rhythm that feels effortless but isn't — sentences double back on themselves, footnotes open trap doors, and the structure mirrors the book's own themes about time folding in on itself. The supporting cast includes Death's granddaughter Susan and Ronnie, the fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse (who left before they got famous), and together they make this one of the most structurally inventive entries in the series.
