- Skip if: you haven't met Vimes — the payoff assumes you care about him
About This Book
Commander Sam Vimes goes on holiday—and if you know Vimes, you already know how that's going to end. Snuff sends Ankh-Morpork's finest copper into the English-countryside-adjacent pastoral of the Disc, where the crimes run deeper than murder and the villains are the kind who've never had to answer for anything. Pratchett uses this fish-out-of-water setup to ask a question he clearly cared about fiercely: who speaks for the people no one else will speak for? It's a novel with real anger underneath its humor, and that anger gives it weight.
What makes Snuff a particular pleasure to read is the way Pratchett layers his comedy so precisely that you can feel the craft in every paragraph. Vimes is one of fiction's great interior monologues—a man constantly arguing with himself about justice, class, and self-control—and the country setting strips away his usual resources, forcing the prose to do more with character and less with plot machinery. The book is funny in the way only genuinely serious writers manage: the jokes land harder because something real is at stake behind them.
